THE HIDDEN MUSEUM : BIBRACTE - The indissociable articulation between Architecture and Landscape Feb. 13, 2014

Out of the projects from French President F.Mitterrand , one is less known, maybe less visited though it is worth seeing for its peculiar location and architecture.

A Historical site: Mount Beuvray, in that wild area of Burgundy called Morvan. The  archaeological site of Bibracte, where Vercingétorix once was proclaimed chief of the Gaule’s coalition…at the exact location of a former oppidum and town.

Pierre Louis Faloci sets up his museum on the mountain pass, near the oppidum. He firmly anchors his architecture of stones and glass. The building overlooks the landscape and allows a beautiful view on the wide-open  Morvan’s forest.

The architect immerses his building in this prestigious and wild site. Walls, floors and  roofs are never linked. Detached one from the other, they simply maintain the museum space without any brutality. Light slides through any possible gaps in the architecture. The  inside-outside permeability is nicely dosed with “double skin” façades where the outside stone plan filters the light and shapes the views from the vertical loopholes.

« The layers of different material: Rough stone for the base, polished stone for the walls, glass and zinc for the doors and windows and the roof, remind the ages of humanity", the general presentation says.

The rich and renewed museography fascinates visitors of all ages.

A minibus or a few minutes walk lead to the top of Mount Beuvray where the panorama opens untill Lyon and the Saône valley.

The walk goes through the enchanted forest, where Celtic gods live in tree trunks, crying their pain with weird contortions. A reconstitution of a Gallic city and its surrounding wall can also be seen in the forest.

Going to Bibracte means letting the Celtic muses take one back to his origins, in this awesome site, smart and sensible.
