From one museum to the next there is sometimes one step or none.
Visiting a museum may have different purposes: curiosity, interest, art collection, temporary exhibition or for the simple love of architecture and space.
From one country to the other, from one architect to the other, from one project to another, styles and spaces tell us stories. There are the well-known museums, old institutions or contemporary ones, built by international star architects, and there are so many other ones which offer surprises and passion to the visitor, through their architecture and art collection.
We 've had a look at two of them, similar in size, each on its continent, one is the MARCO: Museo de Arte contemporaneo de Monterrey, Mexico, the other one the new Navy museum of Istanbul: DENIZ MÜZESI, on the European Bosphorus side.
One wears warm colours in a minimalist and postmodern architecture, the other one uses the soft nuances of the materials used, to give the exhibition its magnitude.
One is locked up on itself, located downtown in a not so secure city, and surrounded by walls: The MARCO (16000m²) built by Riccardo LEGORRETA (student of Luis Barragan) has been inaugurated in June 1991. Outside, a dove sculpture by Juan Soriano, welcomes the visitor before going down to the main entrance hall, great atmosphere with very warm and colourful walls, nuances of yellow, sienna, and pink with natural light playing around it all.
The access to the 11 temporary exhibition rooms (5 000m²), goes through a central space, largely occupied by a water mirror, giving coolness and peacefulness to the site. An inside courtyard, with high fruity colour walls, pinks and orange, offers the best frame to the outside sculpture exhibition. The outside wall façade, coming in and creating small courtyards, can bring out surprises, such as a strong blue colour on a window frame to whoever can see it.
The other one, completely open to the city and the Bosphorus, the new Deniz Müzesi (15 000m²), is establsiehd in the Beşiktaş area. Inaugurated in October 2013, this project was won by a Turkish architect group: TEGET MIMARLIK, to enlarge the exhibition gallery to present the Ottoman dynasty Caiques and add extra versatile rooms for conferences and other activities. Here again the visitor gets in by stepping down towards the Bosphorus light, and discovers a large open space without any columns: The Collection of Historical Caiques.
So impressive !...
This fleet, carefully aligned, seems to be ready to return to the sea! In this monumental space, each Caique creates its own space and stands by itself. The metallic structure above, designed with 7 bridges of 6m high steel trusses, with lengths from 55 to 25 m, underline the Caique space under. The roof and the Bosphorus facade show the inside display of the collection, using voids and solids; The copper is one of the materials used inside, and offers a light and smooth atmosphere given by the plannimetrical refractions of fractal lines.
It is all there, planned, designed, specially built to present this extraordinary collection that fits perfectly like a glove.
Here the architecture is marrying historical patrimony and culture heritage, from the old time to the contemporary one, hoping to share culture with as many people as possible.
