HOTEL DIEU : A LIFE… AND 77 YEARS. Sept. 13, 2014

The "HOTEL-DIEU" is one of the three oldest hospitals in the world. Probably the most monumental one, operating on a surface of around 55 000 sq/m in central Paris.

Its origins are rather uncertain, some documents from the VII century (Year 651) prove its existence as a refuge for invalid, poor and sick people on the left bank of the city. It is in 1164  (this date is still debatable) that Louis VII decided to create it on the "Ile de la cite" close to one another the Hotel-Dieu and Notre Dame.

The body can heal at the Hotel Dieu, whereas the soul can find help at Notre Dame. Therefore the proximity of these two buildings seems an obvious evidence of a predetermined paradigm

The Hotel-Dieu spread out its building over the whole island, the bridge and the left bank. Over the XVIII th century, almost the entire building was devastated by a succession of fire and after the last one, the Hotel Dieu has been rebuild under the Baron Haussmann order on the right bank of the island.

The actual buildings will be built under the plan of the architects Emile Jacques Gilbert and Arthur Stanislas Diet. They will be rebuilt again from 1864 until 1876, under the Baron Haussmann initiative in the renewed Notre Dame perimeter. The Hotel-Dieu will be inaugurated by President Mac Mahon in August 1877.

What is it today ?

The building became has become inadapted for modern technologies and in-patient cares . The emergency department has been closed in November 2013, because of aging matters and not able to respect the today's security conditions.

Up to now the Hotel-Dieu does not know which final orientation will be chosen for its next life. Too many important factors penalize a mature unanimous decision; time will be needed to find the right issue.

Few options are still possible:

- Keep it as a hospital, its first function, delicate and expensive project, needing the total destruction and rebuilt of the building (there on the Ile de la cite or somewhere else) because today's hospital with hi-tech technology needs complete new set up.

- Transform the Hotel-Dieu in a five star palace hotel, interesting financial option for the French state and the Town of Paris, rehabilitation like the Hotel-Dieu in Marseille, and maybe the one in Lyon too.

- Develop a multidisciplinary project, which can regroup under one site a health center, medical schools, a European radiology museum, the museum of the “assistance publique des hospitaux  de Paris”, (AP-HP), and maybe a common department to unify globally health public actions and university sector under the commitment of WHO and UNESCO to help and provide people a better sanitary education.

Defending this last possibility there is a man: Jean Francois Moreau.

Originally from Brittany, this gifted emeritus professor at Paris Descartes university, honorary radiologist at the Necker hospital of Paris (nowadays hospital for children), is recognised in his discipline for his researches and his new "avant garde" approach of radiology, making it becoming medical imaging at the end of the XX th century.

All of his propositions are a life time achievement of reflexion, network, researches and hard work, and his full involvement in the AP-HP.

Jean Francois Moreau thinks it is urgent to redefine Health and sanitary concerns and to transform the Hotel Dieu into a temple of health and culture unifying WHO and UNESCO to creat a new Hippocrate.

« The XXI th century will be spiritual or will not be» if André Malraux had declared this in an interview for "Le Point" magazine in 1975, he confirmed that he would not exclude a global possible spiritual event.

The Hotel Dieu transformed into a health and cultural temple could be the cornerstone for France Expo 2025 project.

Few worlds would not be enough to know Jean Francois Moreau, in any case here are few:

JF Moreau  So much involved in this project for the Hotel Dieu, Docteur JFM had dedicated his life to research and played an important part of the international radiology evolution.

Jean François Moreau is maybe the man of the situation.
